A Self Drive Safari Through Southern Africa

This week's post introduces our new video series – ‘Drive the World,’ which aims to convey what it's like to explore the world overland. To kick things off, our first video features Southern Africa. Using footage shot during Maggie's first 100 days, we offer a fast forward overview of our 25k kilometer journey through wildlife rich South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Join us on a self-drive safari as we camp among lions, leopards and hyenas, repair a busted radiator, and cross rivers, desert, and sandy tracks in search of the amazing wildlife that makes Southern Africa so special. For anyone interested in exploring wild Africa, we hope our video provides just the insight and inspiration to get you going.

  • Hi. I just bought a Chevrolet 4wdTahoe. I just retired and am single in the US. In the US I cannot buy your type of Troopy. The Land Cruiser here is 85,000 and heavy. There are the Lexus g for less. If I want to travel us for a little bit, what would you recommend if you care to. Thank you so much.

You are an inspiration. Nice that you are doing it so young.

    • Thanks for your kind comment Mark, although we haven’t heard the word “young” in association with us in quite some time! Congratulations on your retirement – you have a lot of good times ahead. As for buying a Troopy in the US – yes, we’re well aware that it’s nearly impossible. But there are other good options as well, which brings us to your question regarding good options for doing some travel in the US? I often say, the best vehicle is the one that gets you on the road tomorrow. Many options will work including your Tahoe. We traveled extensively throughout North America in our stock 80 Series Land Cruiser (camping in tents, etc) including a 3 month trip through the Western US, BC, and Alberta, and it did the job well. That said, some vehicles are more comfortable than others, can carry more gear, or are more off-road capable, so the best option will depend on the nature of your trip. That said, to help me answer your question, can you give us a little more information about your trip? Where do you plan to go? Where do you plan to sleep – in a hotel, in the vehicle, rooftop tent, ground tent? Similarly, how important is living in the vehicle vs. outside (i.e. camper idea like our Troopy, vs. simple overland setup w/ ground or rooftop tent, camp kitchen, etc.)? Will you be carrying sports equipment like bikes, kakaks, skis, etc? Do you plan to go off-road (and if so, to you expect to tackle pretty technical routes or do you anticipate your travels will keep to fire roads, etc. with an occasional need for a little ground clearance and 4WD)? What is your general budget? I ask all these questions as they will help me determine whether you’re travels are more suited to something like a 4WD camper / van vs. a simpler setup like a Toyota 4-Runner or Jeep, which can be kitted out for overland style on / off-road travel. Send us an email through our contact page at https://www.wanderlibre.com/contact and we can go from there. Thanks for getting in touch!
