Walking with Elephants

Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe, 2016

Walking with elephants in Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe. Mana Pools is a special place. Perhaps our favorite wildlife reserve in Africa. I took this photo of Sheri one afternoon as we walked with Boswell, one of Mana Pools most famous elephants. The freedom to search for wildlife on foot is one of the reasons we enjoy game viewing in Mana Pools so much.  For the nature lover, it offers an opportunity for greater immersion with wild Africa - to follow a pack of wild dogs on a hunt or sit quietly on the sandy banks of one of Mana's four permanent pools as Nile crocs and African skimmers fish for breakfast. As a wildlife photographer, it's transformative - an opportunity, for example, to shoot from low angles and other positions impossible from the confines of a vehicle.
