Hamar

Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2002

Hamar woman with her baby in a small village near Turmi, Ethiopia. For two days, a little Hamar girl spied on us from behind trees near our camp. When the little girl finally approached, she took Sheri's hand and led us into her village. When we arrived, this woman and her baby were the only ones there.

Hamar women are arguably the most beautiful in the Omo Valley. Note the distinctive red clay-like mixture of animal fat and ocra decorating her hair as well as the goat skins, necklace made of animal teeth, and metal arm bracelets. The two metal bracelets around her neck indicate she's married.
